Roman Temple site

Story
Near the bandstand in Greenwich Park, there is an area of ground that, at first glance, appears to contain nothing monumental. Yet, beneath that seemingly unremarkable surface lies an exceptional archaeological site: a Romano-Celtic temple that was in use from about AD 100 until around AD 400. Excavations carried out over the course of the twentieth century successfully identified the central *cella*, its surrounding *ambulatory*, and part of the sacred precinct or *temenos*. Discoveries made here —including coins, inscriptions, ivory objects, and decorated materials— revealed that this was not an ordinary villa, as initially thought, but a significant religious site. Most of the sacred precinct remains unexcavated, which is one reason for its protection as a Scheduled Monument. This spot is particularly powerful precisely because it does not offer a dramatic standing ruin; instead, it encourages an understanding that the grass protects nationally rare archaeology beneath one's feet. Greenwich Park therefore transcends being merely a royal landscape, revealing a history of worship that began more than a millennium before the Tudors.
What to look for
Look for a low mound and subtle changes in the ground's elevation. Use the park's interpretive signs to locate the temple, rather than searching for standing walls.
Secret detail
Most of the sacred precinct, the *temenos*, remains unexcavated. This means much of what makes the site important is still hidden beneath the grass.
