Lost Magnetic Observatory site

Story
Greenwich is world-renowned for its observatory, but in the late nineteenth century, this park hosted another, less familiar scientific complex dedicated specifically to magnetic measurements. To study the Earth’s magnetic field, very particular conditions were required: buildings and their equipment had to be constructed minimising the use of iron and located far from any interference that could distort the delicate instruments. It was a place where scientific precision dictated every detail of its design. However, the unstoppable advance of modern infrastructure, with the expansion of electrical and railway networks, made it increasingly difficult to maintain these pristine conditions. Interference grew, and magnetic activity had to be relocated to a more remote site. Today, the observatory has almost entirely vanished from view. What remains is primarily the archaeology and memory of a site that was once crucial for science, a testament to how urban evolution can reshape even the most specialised landscapes.
What to look for
Look for subtle changes in the ground and the park's information panels. Imagine an observatory designed with an obsession to avoid any piece of iron and all electromagnetic interference.
Secret detail
Such was the rigour that even the choice of building materials for the structures was carefully made to avoid disturbing the magnetic measurements being taken inside.
Where exactly
Within Greenwich Park, at the area marked by interpretative panels as the former Magnetic Observatory.
Orientation
Surface this entry only when you are near the location; its limited visibility does not justify a long detour.
Why it matters
This site reveals an unexpected facet of Greenwich's scientific history, beyond astronomy, illustrating the extreme physical sensitivity required for magnetic measurement in its time.
