Near Ranger’s House, Montagu House once stood, a mansion associated with Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of the future George IV. Of that entire complex, the only thing that survives is this small plunge bath, sunken into the ground, complete with its steps and traces of its original lining. It is not a grand palatial ruin, but rather an intimate piece of domestic life, surprising to find within a park filled with monumentality. This bath offers a unique glimpse into the residential occupation of this edge of Greenwich Park, as one of the few physical remains of a house that no longer exists, revealing a personal layer of history in a public setting.
