Pond Square & the old village plan

Highgate · Highgate · Expansion route discovery

Story

Pond Square now appears as a tranquil, roughly triangular clearing at the heart of Highgate, but its shape preserves the logic of the old village. Its name is not merely descriptive: ponds once existed here, supplying water to local residents well into the nineteenth century. Eventually, these ponds were filled in, and the ground became a public open space. Yet, the irregular geometry of the place, the various exits leading to small lanes, and the mix of buildings from different periods still reveal Highgate as it was before its suburban expansion. This space serves more as an exercise in reading urban form than as a formally beautiful square. From here, one can understand why Highgate developed as a hilltop settlement, intimately connected to the roads leading north out of London. The surrounding buildings, the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution (HLSI), and the narrow side lanes create the atmosphere of a village centre, quite distinct from a formal Georgian square. Before exploring historic gates, Gothic cottages, or modernist architecture, Pond Square offers the key: it is a three-dimensional map of historic Highgate.

What to look for

Notice the irregular shape of the square, the varying architectural styles of the surrounding buildings, the glimpses into side lanes, and the direct connection to South Grove and the HLSI building.

Secret detail

The square's name, 'Pond', commemorates the actual ponds that served as the village's water source until they were filled in during the nineteenth century.

Where exactly

Pond Square, the open space located between South Grove, West Hill, and Highgate High Street. This location refers to the entire square and its various exits.

Orientation

Take a moment for a 360-degree observation before moving on. The aim is to understand how the surrounding streets converge on what was once the old village centre.

Why it matters

Pond Square explains Highgate's original village plan and provides a crucial spatial context for understanding how the settlement formed around an ancient route.
