Story

The Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution is an exceptional survivor of a very Victorian form of urban culture: local institutions created for learning, reading and debate. Founded in 1839 to cultivate interest in literature and science, it moved into 11 South Grove in 1840. The building had an earlier life as a school for Jewish boys and preserves architectural layers ranging from late-seventeenth- or eighteenth-century cellar brickwork to nineteenth-century lecture and library rooms. The 1839 pediment and later red-brick entrance porch hint at its origins and purpose. The HLSI is not a frozen museum; it remains an active cultural institution with a library, courses, exhibitions, lectures and events. This makes it a bridge between historic Highgate and an intellectual tradition that is still alive. Even when you do not go inside, the building's facade and porch identify a structure still serving essentially the purpose for which the institution was founded.

What to look for

Look for the small pediment dated 1839, the red-brick and terracotta entrance porch, and the domestic scale of the building, which sets it apart from grander institutions.

Secret detail

Inside, an unexpected detail is a royal coat of arms presented by Queen Victoria in 1837 to a Highgate innkeeper, predating the Institution's move here.

Where exactly

11 South Grove, immediately beside Pond Square. The facade and railings are visible from the street.
