Holly Terrace gates & hidden lodge
Highgate · Highgate · Expansion route discovery
Story
Holly Terrace announces itself from West Hill through an almost theatrical entrance: substantial gates, brick walls, and a small lodge house concealed behind them. The attraction is not to enter, as these are private homes, but to observe how such a well-defined boundary can create the impression of another, more secluded Highgate hidden just beyond the wall. This entrance belongs to the Georgian landscape of old Highgate, a time when substantial houses, extensive gardens, and small private developments occupied the hillside. From the public street, the walls hide much of what lies beyond, making the access point itself the true focus of observation. The combination of a visible gateway and a barely glimpsed lodge is precisely the kind of detail often missed when walking along West Hill, if one only focuses on major façades. Here, the 'secret' is spatial: a public viewpoint reveals a private residential enclave without any need to intrude.
What to look for
Observe the composition of the gates and brick walls, paying particular attention to the small lodge house which is partly concealed behind the property boundary.
Secret detail
The easiest detail to miss is not the main gate, but the small lodge house that the wall itself partly conceals from street view.
Where exactly
At the entrance to Holly Terrace from West Hill.
Orientation
Look diagonally through the entrance from West Hill. Remain on public space.
Why it matters
This almost theatrical Georgian entrance eloquently illustrates how private residential enclaves were articulated, suggesting their existence without intruding on their privacy.
