Camley Street Natural Park
King’s Cross · King’s Cross / St Pancras · Hidden nature / canal / urban oasis
Story
Tucked away between St Pancras station, the Regent’s Canal, and the modern King’s Cross development lies a tiny, surprising nature reserve. This space was once a railway coal depot, a hub of industrial activity linked to transport. After its abandonment, nature spontaneously colonised the site. A local campaign successfully protected it from further urban development, allowing it to open as a reserve in 1985. This place immediately evokes the question, "how can this be here?", with its water and lush greenery just minutes from the hustle and bustle of King’s Cross. It offers a unique pause on a tour of the area, inviting you to stop, observe carefully, and discover a facet of London that often goes unnoticed, a testament to nature's resilience in the heart of the city.
What to look for
Look for the stark contrast between the modern King’s Cross urban landscape and the serene woodland, wetland, and pond paths. If mobility allows, seek out the canal viewpoint at the southern end, reached by steep steps with handrails.
Secret detail
This green oasis emerged from a disused railway coal depot. After its abandonment, it was naturally reclaimed by wildlife. A public campaign was crucial in preventing its development and securing its opening as a nature reserve in 1985.
