Mary Wollstonecraft & William Godwin Memorial Tomb
St Pancras · King’s Cross / St Pancras · Literary history / hidden tomb
Story
This modest memorial holds an enormous story, linking Mary Wollstonecraft, William Godwin, and the future Mary Shelley. Historic England records indicate that Mary Godwin secretly met Percy Bysshe Shelley here before they eloped to France, an event that unfolded on this very spot. In 1851, following Mary Shelley’s wishes, Wollstonecraft and Godwin’s remains were moved to Bournemouth, but the memorial itself remained in its original location within St Pancras Old Church Gardens. It is a place that, without proper explanation, could easily be overlooked, despite being one of London's most historically charged literary corners. Its significance lies in taking a moment to pause, look carefully, and uncover a layer of London's past that often goes unnoticed.
