St Pancras / Regent’s Canal · King’s Cross / St Pancras · Industrial heritage / Victorian architecture

Story

This small Victorian brick tower, an industrial gem, was built in 1872 to supply water to the steam locomotives of St Pancras station. Surprisingly ornate for a functional building, its story takes an even more unique turn in the early 21st century. In 2001, threatened by demolition due to the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, the tower was dismantled into several sections and physically moved roughly 700 metres to its current location beside the St Pancras Yacht Basin. Its rescue and relocation stand as a testament to the will to preserve the city's industrial heritage, offering today a window into the engineering and functional aesthetic of the Victorian era, and recalling the infrastructure that supported London's railway boom.
