Gasholder Park
King’s Cross / Regent’s Canal · King’s Cross / St Pancras · Industrial architecture / park / viewpoint
Story
This contemporary park is nestled inside the restored skeleton of a huge Victorian gasholder. The gasholders of the former Pancras Gasworks date from the 1850s. Gasholder No. 8, which now surrounds you, was dismantled from its original location, meticulously restored over two years, and reinstated here in 2013, rebuilt piece by piece to form this public space.
What to look for
Look for the imposing circular iron frame of the former Gasholder No. 8, which encircles the lawn. Step inside and look up to appreciate its scale and complexity; the experience is more impactful than viewing it only from afar.
Secret detail
The structure you see was carefully dismantled, with each of its pieces catalogued and treated, then reassembled in this new location, a process that took over two years to complete.
Where exactly
Observation point within or next to the park, chosen to experience the huge iron frame at human scale.
Orientation
