Fitzrovia Chapel

Fitzrovia · Marylebone → Fitzrovia → Bloomsbury · Hidden chapel / spectacular interior

Story

One of central London’s most dazzling hidden interiors. It is a small space, free to enter when open, and completely unexpected. This was once the chapel of the Middlesex Hospital. Although the hospital itself has now disappeared, the chapel remarkably survived, preserved as an ornate capsule amidst a new urban development. Its modest red-brick exterior, with an arched wooden door, gives little hint of the richness and splendour that await inside. Upon entering, you are met with gold mosaics, marble, and elaborate vaulting, revealing the extraordinary decorative opulence of what was once a hospital chapel. It is a place that invites you to slowly look upwards and marvel at every detail.

What to look for

Note the striking contrast between the modest red-brick exterior and the explosion of gold mosaics, marble, and ornate vaulting that covers every surface inside. Pay particular attention to the ceiling.

Secret detail

Though the Middlesex Hospital it once served was demolished, the chapel was miraculously saved from destruction, becoming a surprising historical remnant within a modern urban development.

Where exactly

The chapel sits in pedestrian Pearson Square. Look for the small red-brick exterior and arched wooden door.

Orientation

Enter from Pearson Square through the arched door; once inside, turn 360° and look especially upwards.

Why it matters

This chapel is a testament to the practice of incorporating art and beauty into public buildings, even hospitals. Its survival, contrasting with the demolition of its host hospital, illustrates the shifting priorities of urban development in London.
