Jeremy Bentham Auto-Icon

Bloomsbury / UCL · Marylebone → Fitzrovia → Bloomsbury · Human remains / philosophy / extraordinary curiosity

Story

One of the most extraordinary objects you can encounter in London is Jeremy Bentham's Auto-Icon, the preserved body of the philosopher, displayed according to his own instructions. Bentham, a key figure of utilitarianism, wished for his remains to be preserved and exhibited as an "Auto-Icon" to serve as a perpetual presence. The figure, dressed in his own clothes, contains his skeleton. Although the intention was to use his real head, the attempts at mummification were not presentable, so a wax head was commissioned. The original head is preserved separately. This peculiar display is located at University College London, an institution with which Bentham was philosophically aligned, though it's important to note that, contrary to popular belief, he was not its founder.

What to look for

Look for a seated figure inside a large glass case, dressed in period clothing. Inside, you will see the preserved skeleton of the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, topped with a wax head.

Secret detail

Jeremy Bentham's original head underwent preservation attempts that were unsuccessful, leading to the Auto-Icon displaying a wax head. The real head, however, is preserved separately and is occasionally exhibited during special events.

Where exactly

Go to the UCL Student Centre, located at 27–28 Gordon Square. Once inside, the Auto-Icon is displayed in a glass case in the entrance area of the public atrium.

Orientation

Upon entering the Student Centre, look for the large glass case in the atrium or entrance area. It is readily visible.

Why it matters
