Berry Bros. & Rudd’s Hidden Cellars

St James’s · Piccadilly → St James’s → Covent Garden · Historic cellar / wine / event-only interior

Story

Beneath No.3 St James’s Street lies far more than just a shop basement. Berry Bros. & Rudd preserves a remarkable series of historic cellars extending underneath this corner of St James’s. Founded in 1698, the firm evolved from a grocer and coffee merchant into one of Britain’s great wine businesses, and its underground spaces developed as the company grew. The best known is the Napoleon Cellar. Berry Bros. & Rudd itself connects these vaults with Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte — the future Napoleon III — who befriended George Berry during his exile in London and is associated with clandestine meetings held here prior to his return to France. Today, these cellars are used for tastings, courses, dinners, and private events. On selected dates, Berry Bros. & Rudd also runs guided visits, offering access to these normally closed spaces.

What to look for

If you have a booking, look for the ancient vaulted cellars, the dedicated tasting spaces, and the renowned Napoleon Cellar. Without a reservation, we encourage you to enjoy the historic shop and Pickering Place.
