Burlington Arcade
Mayfair / Piccadilly · Piccadilly → St James’s → Covent Garden · Historic shopping arcade / picturesque interior street
Story
Step through the Piccadilly entrance, and the street's clamour suddenly recedes. Burlington Arcade is a covered shopping street that has been operating continuously since 1819. Built adjacent to Burlington House, it was conceived from the outset as a protected setting for the sale of jewellery and fashionable luxury goods, establishing a significant precedent for the covered shopping galleries that would spread across Europe during the 19th century. Since its opening, the arcade has maintained its own uniformed guardians, known as Beadles. These guardians still patrol today, preserving a tradition of behavioural rules that historically included bans on running, whistling, and generally boisterous conduct. Burlington Arcade, with its more than forty boutiques and distinct opening hours, continues to present itself as an institution established in 1819. You don't need to buy anything to enjoy the experience. Simply enter and walk slowly beneath the glazed roof, observing the small, repeated shopfronts on either side. It is as much an architectural experience as a retail one, offering a glimpse into a style of commerce that flourished in London and beyond.
What to look for
Look for the long, covered perspective, the narrow, symmetrical shopfronts on both sides, and, if you're lucky, the Beadles in their traditional uniforms as they patrol.
Secret detail
The Beadles, the arcade's guardians, pre-date the founding of the Metropolitan Police by a decade, and even today they enforce the distinctive etiquette of this centuries-old space.
