Stave Hill rainwater dock map

Story
At Stave Hill, a bronze relief map sculpture brings the lost Surrey Docks back into physical form. Created by Michael Rizzello, it meticulously represents the intricate network of docks, channels, and basins that once dominated much of Rotherhithe before the extensive 20th-century redevelopments. The map is compelling even when dry, but after rain, something particularly evocative occurs: water collects within the depressions that mark the locations of the former dock basins. This artwork achieves something that a conventional interpretation panel cannot. It allows visitors to compare the current landscape with the lost industrial geography, using both relief and actual water as narrative elements. From Stave Hill, the sheer scale of the dock system becomes strikingly clear: today's parks, housing estates, and woodland lie superimposed upon what was once a vast port infrastructure. The map encourages a reinterpretation of the entire area, revealing how Rotherhithe was fundamentally shaped by the extensive Surrey Docks system.
What to look for
Study the three-dimensional layout of the former docks and channels. After rainfall, notice how the depressions representing them hold water.
Secret detail
The map is ingeniously designed: rainwater collects in the relief's depressions, 'reactivating' the lost dock and channel system with actual water.
Where exactly
Stave Hill, off Timber Pond Road. Look for the large bronze relief map before or after climbing to the top of the hill.
Orientation
Walk around the map to compare it with the surrounding landscape, then seek an elevated view from the top of Stave Hill.
Why it matters
This sculpture helps visitors understand how a vast, now-lost port infrastructure fundamentally shaped the topography and development of the entire Rotherhithe district.
