The Angel

Rotherhithe · Rotherhithe · Second-audit addition

Story

The Angel occupies an extraordinary point on the riverfront, immediately adjacent to the archaeological landscape of Edward III's manor. While the building you see today dates mainly from the nineteenth century, this site has a much older tradition of hospitality. Its terrace and position overlooking the Thames make it evident why it has historically served as a significant stopping place for travellers, workers, and all river traffic. This proximity of a functioning pub to the remains of a medieval manor, and nearby, King's Stairs, powerfully illustrates how the very same river edge has been used by kings, sailors, residents, and now pub-goers across very different periods.

What to look for

Note its prime position directly on the river, and the striking, almost immediate, proximity of the medieval manor remains of Edward III, just beside it.

Secret detail

Its true charm isn't in pub legends, but in sharing the riverfront with a genuine royal manor, lending it a unique historical depth.

Where exactly

101 Bermondsey Wall East, beside the Thames and very close to the remains of the Edward III Manor House.

Orientation

An exterior view is sufficient. Entering or buying a drink is optional and does not affect the basic route.

Why it matters

The riverside pub offers a living, visible reference point right beside the much less conspicuous medieval royal landscape, connecting different eras in one spot.
