Surrey Lock
Rotherhithe · Rotherhithe · Second-audit addition
Story
Surrey Lock, as it stands today beside Rotherhithe Street, might appear to be a residual piece of infrastructure, yet it preserves genuine machinery from the second major phase of expansion of the Surrey Docks. Built around 1860 by the engineer Jennings, the lock retains its granite kerbs, cast-iron bollards, and capstans, along with two sets of iron-clad gates. These gates were originally powered hydraulically. What is particularly interesting is that this is not a museum reconstruction. Although the lock has been filled in up to the gates, enough of its original mechanism and geometry survive to clearly illustrate how vessels entered and exited the extensive dock system. Historic England protects this site specifically for its industrial archaeological interest and as a fine example of lock design from the beginning of a new period of dock expansion. For anyone exploring the lost Surrey Docks, Surrey Lock provides a crucial element: authentic working infrastructure still in its original setting.
What to look for
Look for the two sets of iron-clad gates, along with the cast-iron capstans and bollards, which clearly convey the lock’s original mechanical function.
Secret detail
The original gates of this lock were hydraulically powered. The machinery that you see here today is authentic, belonging to a genuine lock dating from around 1860.
Where exactly
Surrey Lock on Rotherhithe Street. Look for the gates, granite kerbs, bollards, and capstans of the former lock; do not mistake it for an ornamental water feature.
Orientation
Stay on the public paths around the lock and view it from several angles. There is no need to enter any restricted areas to understand its mechanism.
Why it matters
Surrey Lock retains gates, capstans, and bollards that are real machinery from the former Surrey Docks system, offering a tangible link to its industrial past.
