Story

Greenland Dock preserves a significant part of the vast Surrey Docks system, allowing you to experience the true scale of a dock basin that the Stave Hill map can only represent. Its origins trace back to a small natural haven from the 17th-18th centuries, initially associated with ship repair, and later with whaling and general commerce. Through successive enlargements, this basin was transformed into one of the largest in the Port of London, with a rich and complex history of goods exchange and working life on its quays. Although today the area around Greenland Dock has been regenerated and is surrounded by housing, with its waters now used for leisure and water sports, its geometry and dimensions remain those of a historic dock basin. The water flowing here is the same that once formed part of the bustling port infrastructure, offering a direct connection to London's maritime past.

What to look for

Observe the immense longitudinal scale of the dock basin, much larger than any modern marina would be. Note how contemporary housing now stands where industrial edges and warehouses once dominated.

Secret detail

Today's leisure landscape and water activities take place on the physical footprint and water volume of a historic Surrey Docks basin, rather than on a newly created, artificial body of water.

Where exactly

Why it matters

Greenland Dock transforms the abstract story of London's lost docks into a surviving basin you can experience at full scale, connecting the city's industrial past with its regenerated present.
