Viaduct Tavern: The ‘Newgate Cell’ That Probably Wasn’t

Newgate Street / Holborn Viaduct · St Paul’s → Newgate → Smithfield → Clerkenwell · Victorian pub / urban myth / prison history

Story

The Viaduct Tavern is a splendid Victorian pub, renowned for a persistent but unverified story: the alleged survival of cells from the old Newgate Prison in its basement. However, both geography and chronology present difficulties. Newgate Prison stood directly across the road and was still operating when the pub first opened its doors in 1869. The basement has also been linked to the Giltspur Street Compter, another prison that, in fact, occupied a different site entirely. Far from diminishing its interest, this situation makes the pub an excellent case study in how urban legends are born and evolve. Vaulted basements, sturdy doors, and subterranean structures can certainly evoke a prison-like atmosphere, and it is true that this entire district was profoundly shaped by the presence of prisons and executions. Over time, an atmospheric cellar came to be transformed into an 'authentic cell' in countless tourist retellings. If the pub is open, we encourage you to step inside and appreciate its interior, a classic example of a Victorian 'gin palace'. However, do not expect to be shown the cells: the basement is not a guaranteed public attraction. The real story here is two-fold: that of the genuine 1869 pub and the fascinating way London constructs mythologies around its subterranean spaces.
