St Bartholomew the Less: The Little Church inside the Ancient Hospital

St Bartholomew’s Hospital · St Paul’s → Newgate → Smithfield → Clerkenwell · Hospital chapel / medieval foundation / hidden church

Story

Smithfield is home to two churches dedicated to St Bartholomew, and it is easy to visit only the larger one. St Bartholomew the Less stands inside the hospital precinct, beyond the monumental Henry VIII Gate. Its history is inseparable from that of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, which was founded in the twelfth century alongside the priory. The building you see today has undergone numerous reconstructions, yet it retains a striking identity: this is not merely a modern hospital chapel but a church with deep medieval roots that has served patients, staff, and the surrounding community for centuries. The contrast is remarkable. Passing through a monumental gateway associated with Henry VIII, you discover, in the heart of one of London’s most famous hospitals, a small and intimate church with an unusual, almost circular interior arrangement.

What to look for

Look for the church's compact interior, its galleries, and how it visually integrates with the hospital's surroundings, reminding you of its function serving the hospital community.

Secret detail

Many visitors to the nearby St Bartholomew the Great do not realise that another historic church dedicated to the same saint is hidden within the hospital complex.

Where exactly

Enter St Bartholomew’s Hospital through the Henry VIII Gate on West Smithfield. The church is inside the hospital courtyard.

Orientation

Once you have passed through the Henry VIII Gate, look for the church within the hospital precinct, rather than from the outer street.
