St Stephen Walbrook: the Small Dome that Anticipated St Paul’s
Walbrook · St Paul’s → Tower Hill · Wren / City churches / dome / Samaritans
Story
St Stephen Walbrook is easy to miss among the City’s offices, yet its interior is one of Christopher Wren’s most important architectural experiments. The medieval church was destroyed in 1666 and Wren built the present building after the Great Fire. On a very small site he organised the interior around a central dome carried on eight arches, creating a luminous space of surprising monumentality. Architectural historians often treat it as a crucial experiment before the much larger dome of St Paul’s. The building’s story did not end with Wren. At the centre stands Henry Moore’s massive circular stone altar, a modern intervention that caused controversy precisely because it breaks with the conventional arrangement of an altar at the far end. And in 1953 the rector, Chad Varah, founded Samaritans here after being deeply affected by the suicide of a young woman; what began as a listening service for people in despair developed into an international organisation. From the street the church seems almost squeezed by its neighbours. If it is open, go inside: this is one of those places where the history becomes clearest when you look up. The dome makes a tiny City church feel far larger than its plot should allow.
