Former Stapleton’s Horse & Carriage Repository
Spitalfields / Shoreditch · Spitalfields / Shoreditch · Second-audit addition
Story
At 106 Commercial Street stands a building that, by its sheer size and unusual character, seems almost out of place on its narrow urban plot. Around 1890, this structure operated as Stapleton’s Horse and Carriage Repository, an innovative vertical market where horses and carriages were stored, displayed, and sold across multiple floors. What makes this building truly exceptional is that it still retains the physical logic of its original use, including the internal ramp by which horses ascended to the upper levels. Historic England recognises it as a unique survival, the only *horse repository* of its kind remaining in London. Its significance lies in prompting the imagination to picture the remarkable vertical movement of animals within an urban building. There is no need to enter: from Commercial Street, the imposing façade reveals its scale, and with knowledge of the ramp and former stalls, the building's exterior is completely reinterpreted. It is a remarkable discovery precisely because it does not conform to the conventional image of a horse market.
