Story
The Bishopsgate Institute was founded in the late nineteenth century as a public institution dedicated to education, culture, and access to knowledge. Charles Harrison Townsend’s distinctive Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau building houses a library, meeting rooms, and collections that have increasingly specialised in histories often underrepresented in official archives. Its holdings include material on London, labour and protest movements, secularism, and LGBTQ+ communities. This makes it a particularly relevant place, as it not only preserves 'local history' but also the memories of groups and campaigns that are often difficult to find in general museums. While access to the reading rooms or collections depends on specific hours and rules, the exterior and the institutional concept are always accessible. From Liverpool Street, this building can serve as an interesting alternative prologue to exploring the Spitalfields neighbourhood.
