Brick Lane Jamme Masjid
Spitalfields / Shoreditch · Spitalfields / Shoreditch · Second-audit addition
Story
This building has witnessed an extraordinary succession of communities and religions, reflecting the changing waves of migration that have shaped this London neighbourhood. Originally, in the 18th century, it was built as a chapel by French Huguenots, refugees who brought their trades and a new faith to the city. Over time, as that congregation adapted or dispersed, the building transitioned to serve Methodists, another significant religious current in London's history. Later, as the Jewish community of the East End grew and thrived, the same structure was transformed into a synagogue, serving as a spiritual and communal hub for several generations of immigrants. Finally, today, it is the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid, an active mosque serving the Muslim community. Few places in London so tangibly reveal how buildings are inherited, reinterpreted, and reused, a physical canvas of migration and faith stories.
What to look for
Observe the main façade, which retains elements from its various stages. Look for architectural details that hint at its layered history and how the contemporary minaret integrates with the existing structure. Seek out the different inscriptions or adornments that reveal its past religious identities.
Secret detail
On the façade, look for a sundial bearing an intriguing Latin inscription: "Umbra Sumus", meaning "We are shadow". This detail is a vestige from one of the building's past lives, a subtle reminder of transience and the passage of time.
Where exactly
59 Brick Lane. You are standing in front of the mosque's main entrance.
Orientation
The exterior of the building is always accessible. If you wish to visit the interior, please remember it is an active mosque. Kindly respect worship times, mosque rules, and its function as a living place of prayer.
