Trafalgar Square’s Tiny Police Box

Trafalgar Square · Trafalgar Square → Strand → Somerset House → Temple · Street curiosity / police history

Story

At the south-east corner of Trafalgar Square, a small stone structure is so integrated into the wall that it often goes unnoticed. Although for decades it has been popularly known as "Britain's smallest police station", its function was more modest: an observation post or a tiny police box. This spot had already hosted a public lamp since 1826. Later, in 1926, Scotland Yard installed a telephone line and a light, enabling officers inside to call for assistance. Its strategic location allowed the police to monitor the numerous demonstrations and large gatherings that take place in Trafalgar Square, without the need to construct a full police station. Thus, this small edifice became a kind of watchful eye embedded in the heart of the square. Today, it no longer serves police functions and is used for storage. Its charm lies precisely in discovering it: once you know its history, you will recognise the small door and the upper lamp on the corner of the wall. It is the kind of detail that, without the right information, is easily mistaken for just another architectural feature of the square, even if you have passed it a hundred times.
