Wapping Old Stairs
Wapping · Wapping · Expansion route discovery
Story
Wapping Old Stairs retains a physical connection with the Thames that predates the significant transformation of the area by the construction of the docks. River stairs were once everyday infrastructure: they allowed people to embark, disembark, work with watermen, and access the foreshore according to the tide. This paved passage and its flight of steps survived even as increasingly large warehouses rose all around it, completely altering the river landscape. This spot is compelling due to the contrast it presents. From Wapping High Street, it appears as a narrow gap between buildings; yet, if you follow the passage with your gaze, the river suddenly comes into view. This sequence — enclosed street, passage, stairs, water — recreates a form of access that was once common in London but is now surprisingly rare. There's no need to descend into the mud to understand its significance. Indeed, safety comes first: tides change quickly, and the foreshore is not an automatic extension of the route. The key is to recognise how the Thames once directly informed the daily logic of the streets through these small corridors.
What to look for
Notice the narrow corridor opening from the street, the way the light changes as you approach the river, and the steps that descend towards the tidal zone of the Thames.
Secret detail
These stairs predate the 19th century, possibly dating back to the 18th century, and are one of the few historic river accesses that survived the immense expansion of warehouses that once surrounded the Wapping area.
