Gun Wharves hydraulic cranes
Wapping · Wapping · Expansion route discovery
Story
At Gun Wharves, three hydraulic cranes remain mounted directly on the walls of what were once warehouses and are now residential buildings. These metal structures, with their jibs, cabs, and lattice frames, are tangible reminders of the port's industrial life. During their working days, they were used to lift and move goods from ships or vehicles to the various floors of the warehouses, facilitating the loading and unloading logistics along Wapping's docks. The significance of these cranes lies in the fact that they were not removed when the buildings were converted into residences. They stand as enduring appendages of the original warehouse architecture, allowing observers to imagine the bustling vertical movement that characterised the port. While St John’s Wharves showcases the gantries that moved goods horizontally between buildings, Gun Wharves illustrates the other direction of port transport: up and down. Together, these structures offer a tangible insight into Wapping's historical logistics without the need for a museum recreation, all visible from the public street.
