Story
Shadwell Basin is one of the largest bodies of water surviving from the historic London Docks system. Although it is now primarily used for recreation and surrounded by modern housing, its distinctive shape is not that of a newly landscaped lake. Instead, it preserves the original geometry of a working dock basin, historically connected by locks and channels to the River Thames, which facilitated the movement of vessels and goods. The richness of this place lies in the fact that not everything visible belongs to the same period: Shadwell Basin is an industrial palimpsest that continued to adapt and evolve long after the initial Georgian phase of the London Docks.
